Why he might be annoying:

    He was the only Republican to vote against the Balanced Budget Constitutional Amendment.
    He voted in favor of affirmative action.
    He voted against the Gulf War (1991).
    He supported the 2003 war in Iraq.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Although a Republican, he voted in favor of liberal positions more often than conservative.
    He personally witnessed the effects of the bombing of Hiroshima and became committed to peace around the world.
    He took a courageous stance as the only governor to publicly come out against the Vietnam War.
    He is uniquely consistent on issues of life and death, being pro-life and anti-death penalty.
    He voted in favor of tort reform.
    He said in regards to the religious right: 'As a Christian, there is no other part of the New Right ideology that concerns me more than its self-serving misuse of religious faith.'
    Tom Brokaw wrote chapter on him in his book 'The Greatest Generation.'
    He never lost an election.
    He was popular among his constituents.
