U.S. Congressman
The Resume
(July 28, 1959- )
Born in Verdun, France
Represents North Carolina's 11th District (January 3, 2013-March 30,2020)
Chair of the House Freedom Caucus (2017-2019)
Republican
Left Congress to become Chief of Staff for Donald Trump (March 31, 2020)
Why he might be annoying
He claimed to have a bachelors degree, but it was actually an associates degree.
He said, ‘2012 is the time we are going to send Mr. Obama back to Kenya or wherever it is.’
He was the main architect of the 2013 government shutdown, which wound up costing his district $1 million a day due to national parks being closed.
The House Ethics Committee fined him $40,000 (2018) for keeping his chief of staff, Kenny West, on payroll despite West having resigned after being accused of inappropriate behavior towards female staffers.
He claimed legalizing same-sex marriage would create a Constitutional crisis.
Former Speaker John Boehner said of him, ‘He’s an idiot. I can’t tell you what makes him tick.’ (Then again, Meadows led an effort by the Tea Party to remove Boehner as Speaker, so some of that is probably sour grapes.)
He believes in a ‘deep state’ conspiracy to undermine Donald Trump.
When Michael Cohen testified about Trump’s alleged racism, Meadows played a variant of ‘He can’t be racist – some of his best friends (or at least staffers) are black’ by inviting HUD official Lynne Patton to attend the hearing.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib accused him of using Patton as a ‘prop,’ which she called ‘racist in itself.’
Why he might not be annoying
He said, ‘Growing up poor taught me a real appreciation for work.’
He was a successful real estate broker before going into politics.
He later described his send Obama back to Kenya remark as ‘probably a poor choice of words on my part’ and said he believes that Obama is a US citizen.
The Ethics Committee concluded he took ‘immediate and appropriate steps’ by separating Kenny West from female staffers and requesting an investigation.
He opposes increasing taxes.
Tlaib later ‘clarified’ that she had not intended to call Meadows himself racist; later the two hugged it out on the House floor.
