Why he might be annoying
He and fellow 'Star Trek' actor William Shatner dislike each other, intensely.
Shatner claims Takei jealousy stems from the fictional rankings on Trek, that when he portrayed an ensign, Shatner portrayed a captain and when he portrayed a captain, Shatner's role was that of an admiral.
Takei once spoke of Sulu as 'Spending 25 years at the damned helm console.'
He kept his gay lifestyle hidden for over 20 years.
Why he might not be annoying
He and his family were placed in an internment camp during WW II.
He graduated UCLA.
He was able to get many parts in WW II movies because he is of Japanese descent.
He is the first Star Trek actor to attend a Trek Convention in South America (Brazil).
He admitted he was gay (October 2005).
