Why he might be annoying:

Many Europeans resented his role in transferring the Old World's art treasures to America.
He was unabashed about sucking up to the wealthy.
To give paintings a glossy finish, he would have old varnish coatings scraped off, which often damaged the paint.

Why he might not be annoying:

He said his success was based on a simple observation: 'Europe has a great deal of art, and America has a great deal of money.'
He convinced many of his clients to donate their art collections to museums.
He donated funds to build galleries at the British Museum and the Tate Museum.
He provided the tapestries and rugs for Edward VII's coronation.
He was quite charming, with Kenneth Clark commenting, 'When he was around, it was as if everyone in the room had two drinks.'
