The Resume

    (2008-September 28, 2011)
    Born in North Carolina
Nickname was Heidi the Cross-Eyed Opossum
Orphaned in North Carolina and raised in a wild animal sanctuary
Donated to the Odense Zoo in Denmark, and in turn was donated to Germany's Leipzig Zoo in May 2010
Photograph published in Bild magazine (December 2010) and became an instant Facebook and YouTube celebrity
Euthanized by Zoo veterinary staff for an unspecified health condition at age three

Why she might be annoying:

Though born in North Carolina, her species is known as a Virginia opossum.
Due to poor eating habits as a youngster she was severely overweight when she arrived at Leipzig Zoo, and immediately put on a strict diet.
She was thrust into the limelight because of a medical condition.
Her taped 2011 Oscar prediction antics were supposed to appear at the 83rd Academy Awards, but instead were shown on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' (quite a letdown)
She followed in the footsteps of previous German animal celebs such as Knut and Paul the Octopus. (uh, that would be tenticlesteps, but no matter)

Why she might not be annoying:

Her cross eyes were thought to be caused by fatty deposits behind her eyes, the result of poor diet, but it did not hurt her in any way.
Even after fame hit, the zoo did not want a media circus and refused to showcase her in special quarters, opting to put her with their two other opossums - her sister Naira (normal sighted) and a male named Teddy.
The diet she was put on improved her overall health, but didn't uncross her eyes.
She correctly picked two of the three 2011 Oscar winners, choosing Natalie Portman and Colin Firth as Best Actress and Actor, but opting for long shot '127 Hours' as Best Picture over winner 'The King's Speech.'
At the time of her death, she had well over 300,000 friends on Facebook and several YouTube tribute songs posted.
Opossums live for about two years in the wild, so she had a full (and famed) life.
