The Resume

    (1960-1968)
    Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Members in 1962: Rosetta Hightower, Shirley Brickley, Marlena Davis and Steve Caldwell
Recorded the singles 'The Wah Watusi' (1962), 'Don't Hang Up' (1962), 'South Street' (1963), 'Not Me' (1963) and 'Cross Fire!' (1963)

Why they might be annoying:

They were originally called Audrey and the Teenettes, but had to change the name when 13-year-old Audrey Brickley's mother refused to let her perform in clubs with the group.
They took their new name from a synthetic fiber as a tongue-in-cheek nod to their rivalry with another group at their high school, the Cashmeres.
They had to audition three times for Cameo-Parkway Records before they were signed to the label.
They did the inevitable reunion for the oldies circuit despite missing the lead singer from their hit-making days.
'Don't Hang Up' was used in ads by AT&T in the 80s.
They are usually classified as a girl group despite featuring a guy in their line-up.

Why they might not be annoying:

'The Wah-Watusi,' 'Don't Hang Up' and 'South Street' were each Top 10 hits and earned Gold Records for sales of over a million singles.
Hightower settled in England as a soloist and session singer, backing Joe Cocker on 'With a Little Help from My Friends' and John Lennon on 'Power to the People.'
Caldwell served on the Philadelphia Board of Education for 29 years.
Shirley Brickley was murdered by an intruder in her home at age 32 (1977).
Davis died of lung cancer at age 48 (1993).
