Religious Figure

The Resume

    (circa 291-circa 304)
    Born in Rome
    Also known as Saint Ines
Martyred by being stabbed or beheaded
    Feast Day is January 21
Patron saint of engaged couples, virgins, children, gardeners and Girl Guides
Venerated by Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and the Orthodox Church
Often depicted holding a lamb and a palm frond or sword

Why she might be annoying:

Popular accounts of her can be rather saccharine.
When threatened with rape, she said Jesus was too jealous a husband to allow this.
Her hair miraculously grew and covered her to protect her purity.
Superstitious young girls once believed they would dream of their future husbands on the eve of her feast day.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was sentenced to death for refusing to marry the son of a Roman prefect.
Because it was illegal to execute virgins, she was dragged to a whorehouse to be raped. (However anyone who tried to molest her went blind).
God killed the prefect’s son but revived him at Agnes’s request.
Her foster sister was stoned to death for praying at her tomb.
To this day, the wool of two lambs blessed by the pope in her name is used to make the pallium worn by archbishops.
