    It was the starting point of Route 666 -- until paranoia about the Number of the Beast and rampant sign theft prompted a renumbering to Route 491.
    Its crime index is consistently more than twice the US average.
    It ranked #5 in the nation for largest percentage of residents without health insurance.
    One New Mexico newspaper claimed it was starting to resemble Detroit: 'a lot of empty buildings, pawn shops and bars.'

Why Gallup, New Mexico might not be annoying:

    It is known as 'the Heart of Indian Country' because it is located in the middle of several reservations.
    Its historic El Rancho Hotel hosted many stars of Hollywood's golden age, including John Wayne, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Joan Crawford, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster and Gregory Peck.
    It has world-class hiking, biking and Motocross trails.
