The Resume

    (August 20, 1999-May 10, 2004)
    Aired on BET
    Created by Sarah Finney Johnson
    Spin-off from 'Moesha'
    Mo'Nique as Nikki Parker
Countess Vaughan as Kimberly Ann 'Kim' Parker
Dorien Wilson as Professor Stanley Ogilvee
    Yvette Wilson as Andell Wilkerson
Jenna Von Oy as Stevie Van Lowe
Ken Lawson as Thaddeus 'T' Radcliffe
Premise: Focuses on the comedic antics of high-school dropout Nikki Parker and her daughter, Kim, as they attend Santa Monica College together

Why The Parkers might be annoying:

It glamorized the act of stalking.
Nikki and Kim attended a two-year college for close to five years.
‘Very-special episodes’ tended to come off as highly ‘preachy’ in tone.
Countess Vaughan later revealed to have had an abortion in the show’s first season.
A character played by Mari Morrow was originally to be Nikki’s best friend/neighbor, but was scratched after being deemed ‘too attractive.’
Monique and Countess Vaughan played mother-and-daughter but were little over ten years apart.
Many jokes revolved around Nicki violating restraining orders the Professor had placed on her (which in real life would have landed her in jail).
Stanley Ogilvee tended to come off as such a dick that it was a wonder why Nikki would ever pursue him so badly in the first place.
The show was a spinoff of the Kim character on Moesha but gradually shifted its focus onto Nikki and the Professor (Kim also got progressively dumber as the show progressed).

Why The Parkers might not be annoying:

It brought Mo'Nique to people’s attention.
It was revealed in the third season that Nikki was adopted.
Freestyle Unity was da bomb! (‘Mama Killed Him!’ Mama Killed Him! Killed Him!’).
When it wasn’t taking itself too seriously, it could be funny as hell.
It was the #1 watched sitcom in black households for all five seasons that it aired.
It was one of the first shows to have its premise deal with the long-term affects of teen pregnancy (where most shows usually only dedicated a single episode to it).
Monique indirectly dropped the title of a book she was promoting in one episode (‘Skinny Women Are Evil!’).
It was the first show since ‘A Different World’ and ‘Family Matters’ to be a spin-off for a black female character.
Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Gary Coleman, Kenya Moore, Steve Harvey, Lil' Kim, Kel Mitchell, Isabel Sanford, Vivica A. Fox and (a very young) Nick Cannon. all had memorable guest spots (many of them victims of Nikki's jealous antics).
It was nominated for both a BET Comedy Award (2004) and an NAACP Image Award (2001, 2003 - 2004) for Outstanding Comedy Series.
