Why The Shield might be annoying:

The series was originally called 'The Barn' then 'Rampart.'
    It is brutal and violent.
It appeals to the vigilante emotion of its audience, as a cop or dog will brutally beat a rapist.
The show was effected by the 2007-08 Writers Guild Strike.
The series glorifies police corruption as pragmatic rather than condemning it.
It reeks of nepotism; Cathy Cahlin Ryan is the creator's wife and their son was given a role. Autumn Chiklis, who plays Vic's daughter, is his real life daughter.
In one scene a cameraman can clearly be seen in the shot.
The LAPD criticized the show because the officer wore their shield over their heart like the LAPD, they capitulated and moved it to the right breast.

Why The Shield might not be annoying:

This series has brought prominence to the FX channel.
    The cast underwent police training.
In its first season it received more Emmy nominations than any other basic cable series in history.
The characters are conflicted, they fight for justice yet steal from criminals. A gay officer is conflicted by his strong belief in the bible.
In the fourth season it attracted Academy Award winner Glenn Close into a recurring role.
Between the fifth and sixth season they released a 15 minute 'promosode' to the internet.
It rarely uses background theme music.
It was announced the series would end after six seasons, but returned for a 7th season.
