Why he might be annoying:

He had a violent temper and was arrested many times.
He got a college scholarship on the condition he would become a minister, but he became an atheist instead.
He claimed that Jesus Christ and St. John the Evangelist were gay lovers.
He was banished from the Netherlands for counterfeiting.
He was killed in a bar fight over the tab.
There are crazy theories that he faked his death and wrote Shakespeare's plays while hiding in France.

Why he might not be annoying:

He worked as a spy for Queen Elizabeth.
When Cambridge University tried to revoke his degree, Elizabeth herself interceded.
Many believe he was assassinated for his espionage involvement.
His ideas about religion and sex were centuries ahead of their time.
He was an early political satirist.
Even if he didn't write plays for Shakespeare, he certainly influenced him.
