    Birth name was Paul Thomas Mann
    Wrote 'Buddenbrooks' (1901), 'Death in Venice' (1912), 'The Magic Mountain' (1924), 'Joseph and His Brothers' (1933-43), 'Doktor Faustus' (1949) and 'The Black Swan' (1954)
    Won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1929)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a closeted homosexual.
    He married his wife for her social status.
    He supported Kaiser Wilhelm II during World War I, leading his brother Heinrich to cut off contact with him.
    Although the brothers reconciled after the war, Thomas wrote 'Real friendship is scarcely conceivable.'
    He reacted to his sister's suicide with 'It is the bitterest thing that could have happened to me.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    William Faulkner called Buddenbrooks 'the greatest novel of the century.'
    He made a public address in Berlin, titled 'An Appeal to Reason,' denouncing the rising Nazi party (1930).
    While in exile in California during World War II, he brought the book 'Bambi' to Walt Disney's attention.
