Vocalist

The Resume

    (February 3, 1939-March 21, 2004)
    Born in Morgantown, North Carolina
    Vocalist, songwriter, and producer
Recorded the single 'Hang on in There, Baby' (1974)
Wrote and/or produced songs for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell ('Ain't No Mountain High Enough,' 'Your Precious Love,' 'If I Could Build My Whole World Around You'), Gladys Knight and the Pips ('I Don't Want to Do Wrong,' 'Daddy Could Swear, I Declare'), Stevie Wonder ('Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday'), Jr. Walker and the All-Stars ('What Does It Take [To Win Your Love for Me],' 'Way Back Home'), Edwin Starr ('25 Miles'), David Ruffin ('My Whole World Ended [The Moment You Left Me]'), Al Wilson ('La La Peace Song'), and the Osmonds ('Love Me for a Reason')

Why he might be annoying:

He became a literal part of the Motown family by marrying Berry Gordy's niece Iris.
Coincidentally, he co-wrote and co-produced the final singles for both Diana Ross & the Supremes ('Someday We'll Be Together,' 1969) and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles ('We've Come Too Far to End It Now,' 1972) before the lead singer departed for a solo career.
He had only one Top 40 hit as a solo artist.
He favored the 70s style of open-necked shirts showing off gold chains and medallions.
He tried to jump on the disco bandwagon by teaming with fellow one-hit wonder Amii Stewart for a medley of 'My Girl/My Guy.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He provided the male vocal on Diana Ross and the Supremes' swan song, 'Someday We'll Be Together.'
He helped create Boz Scaggs' blue-eyed soul sound as producer of his album 'Slow Dancer' (1974).
He was named top new male performer of 1974 by Cash Box.
He was popular on the British 'Northern soul' circuit.
