Why he might be annoying
His signing bonus when he joined the minor league Portland Beavers was a spaghetti dinner.
He was nicknamed 'Slug' for his slow baserunning.
He led the league in errors by a first baseman two seasons (1919-20).
A campaign to get him into the Hall of Fame before he succumbed to lung cancer fell short by six months.
Why he might not be annoying
He saved a woman from drowning in the Detroit River (July 25, 1916).
He missed half the 1918 season serving on a submarine with the US Navy.
He was the first player to hit a home run in every Major League ballpark in use during his career.
He inspired a rare display of non-assholishness by Ty Cobb, who became a leader in the campaign to get him into the Hall of Fame.
