Baseball Player
    (August 3, 1894-July 9, 1951)
    Born in San Francisco, California
Outfielder/first baseman for the Detroit Tigers (1914,1916-29) and Cincinnati Reds (1930,1932)
Four time AL batting champ (1921,1923,1925,1927)
    Career .342 average
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1952)
His signing bonus when he joined the minor league Portland Beavers was a spaghetti dinner.
He was nicknamed 'Slug' for his slow baserunning.
He led the league in errors by a first baseman two seasons (1919-20).
A campaign to get him into the Hall of Fame before he succumbed to lung cancer fell short by six months.
He saved a woman from drowning in the Detroit River (July 25, 1916).
He missed half the 1918 season serving on a submarine with the US Navy.
He was the first player to hit a home run in every Major League ballpark in use during his career.
He inspired a rare display of non-assholishness by Ty Cobb, who became a leader in the campaign to get him into the Hall of Fame.
