The Resume

    (October 5, 2001-February 18, 2007)
    Born in United States
    Created by Allison M. Gibson
Aired on WB, from 2001 to 2006
Aired on The CW for its last season, in 2007
Theme Song, ‘I’m a Survivor’ composed by Shelby Kennedy and Phillip White
    Reba McEntire as Reba Hart
    Christopher Rich as Brock Hart
    Joanna García as Cheyenne Hart
    Steve Howey as Van Montgomery
    Scarlett Pomers as Kyra Hart
    Mitch Holleman as Jake Hart
Melissa Peterman as Barbara Jean (AKA BJ)
Sypnosis – Wise-cracking Houston soccer mom, Reba, copes with her husband leaving her for the eccentric Barbara Jean and with her teenage daughter’s unplanned pregnancy

Why Reba might be annoying:

It is yet another show with simply the star’s name for a title, likely to draw from McEntire’s large fan base.
It recycled the tired ‘I think I’m still in love with my ex-spouse’ plot device through its run.
The Jake character would go episodes without figuring into the plot and, predictably, was seen even less in the later seasons with no explanation.
Kyra’s character was also frequently absent during Seasons 4 and 5, as Scarlett Pomers was in rehab to treat her eating disorder.
    It frequently reused storylines.
Reba’s relationship with BJ was unrealistic (sorry, it’s a lot to ask viewers to believe that you could have that good a relationship with someone who stole your spouse).
BJ’s character was initially written as a Christian fundamentalist zealot, but negative audience reaction got the writers to cut that out pretty quickly.
Van was the stereotypical ‘Southern good ol’ boy’ with the IQ of a brick.
Van and Cheyenne’s unplanned pregnancy was supposed to reflect the struggles of ordinary teenage parents, but their experiences were far from ordinary (Van becoming a professional football player, receiving a multi-grand salary, going heavy into real estate, etc.)
Kyra’s blatant disrespect was too much even for a mouthy sitcom kid (in which 'attitude' is more or less expected).
Predictably, Reba sang the show’s irritating theme song, and often sang her own songs on the show (‘Angel’s Lullaby,’ ‘Walk On’).
When the show was abruptly cancelled, plans for a Cheyenne/Van spinoff on Lifetime fell through.

Why Reba might not be annoying:

It tackled hot-button issues like welfare, alcoholism, drug use, racism, and teen pregnancy.
It reran on Lifetime with ‘Still Standing’ as part of their ‘strong/funny mothers’ lineup.
It was a clean show which preached Christian forgiveness, love, and charity.
Joanna Garcia was a Latina who played a blonde WASP from Houston very convincingly.
In one episode, Reba opened her home to Hurricane Katrina survivors from New Orleans.
It handled Scarlet Pomers’ absence from the show with aplomb, in one episode having Kyra remark that she was ‘getting something to eat,’ when asked where she had been.
During its brief run on CW, it beat out ‘Supernatural’ in ratings.
It was abruptly cancelled, disappointing legions of fans (execs have suggested that it could have been a hit had it moved to ABC or CBS).
It is similar to Mama’s Family (strong Southern woman caring for a dysfunctional family).
Fittingly, Dorothy Lyman, of ‘Mama’s Family,’ guest starred as Reba’s mother.
