Actress

The Resume

    (July 1, 1917-October 3, 1994)
    Born in Charlotte, North Carolina
    Birth name was Virginia Paxton
Acted in 'Death of a Champion (1939),' 'All Women Have Secrets (1939)' 'Kiss the Boys Goodbye (1941),' and 'Docks of New Orleans (1948)'
Best known as Fred Astaire's dancing partner in 'Holiday Inn (1942)'
Appeared on series Playhouse 90, 'Highway Patrol,' and 'Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp'

Why she might be annoying:

She randomly went by the credit 'Phyllis Randall' sometimes.
She was relegated to supporting roles throughout her career.
Only one of her movies - 'Holiday Inn' (of 'White Christmas' fame) - went on to become a classic and would be aired every holiday season. Until people started noticing the film's Abraham black face number (cancelled!).
She has the same name as an Overland Trail stop in Colorado established in 1862.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her dancing skills were top notch.
She and her sister performed a traveling act (the Paxton Sisters) before she was discovered by Darryl Zanuck and signed to Fox.
She was a runner-up in the Miss California contest and a Top Five Finalist in the Miss America pageant (both 1937).
When the movie offers dried up, she wisely changed her focus to television and continued working for another decade.
She withdrew from the entertainment industry entirely in the late 1950s to focus on raising her family.
After her children were grown, she returned to acting, working steadily in character roles throughout the 1980s, including on the soap opera 'Bare Essence' and the miniseries 'North and South.'
She and Fred Astaire managed to steer clear of being in the controversial 'black face' routine.
