Auto Racer

The Resume

    (January 12, 1879-January 19, 1968)
    Born in Spartansburg, Pennsylvania
Won the inaugural Indianapolis 500 (1911)
Formed Harroun Motor Sales Corporation (1917-22)
Inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2000)

Why he might be annoying:

He considered himself an engineer first and said he raced only to test his designs.
He was nicknamed 'the Little Professor.'
At the Indy 500, he had a co-driver who took over for 35 of the 200 laps.
Although he is often credited with installing the first rear view mirror on his Indy 500 car, he admitted, 'It shook so bad, I couldn't see a damn thing in it anyway.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was part of teams that twice set the Chicago to New York speed record (1903-04).
He was one of the designers of the Marmon Wasp in which he won the first Indy 500.
Although not terribly fast, the Wasp was reliable so he only made four pit stops during the Indy 500, far fewer than any of his competitors.
During World War II, he designed vehicles for loading bombers.
He drove the Wasp in demo laps at the Indy 500's 25th and 50th anniversary races.
