    Reported on alleged US plans for a first strike against Iran (2006)

Why he might be annoying:

    He flunked out of the University of Chicago Law School.
    His stories rely heavily on anonymous sources.
    He is bitter about not achieving the same financial success as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.
    The New York Times published its largest retraction ever after he falsely accused diplomat Edward Korry of being involved in the CIA coup to overthrow Salvador Allende in Chile.
    After he made several allegations about John F. Kennedy that turned out to be based on forged documents, historian Arthur Schlesinger called him ‘the most gullible investigative reporter I’ve ever encountered.’
    He admitted, ‘If the standard for being fired was being wrong on a story, I would have been fired long ago.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    He won a Pulitzer Prize for exposing the My Lai massacre (1970).
    He blew the lid off several other cover-ups, such as CIA domestic spying programs and pre-9/11 intelligence failures.
    He won five Polk Awards for investigative journalism.
    'The Price of Power' won a National Book Critics Circle Award.
    He complained about the press’s excessive deference to George W. Bush during the run-up to the Iraq war, saying, ‘I have never seen my peers as frightened as they are now.’
