Garfield's Vice President, replacing him when Garfield was assassinated (September 19, 1881).
Why he might be annoying
He was depressed by his wife's death and President Garfield's death.
During his administration, legislation was passed to limit Chinese immigration.
He signed an agreement with Nicaragua to build a canal (it was never built - 1884).
He smoked.
Why he might not be annoying
He never recovered from his wife's death and had flowers placed at her portrait daily.
As a widower, his 10 year old daughter acted as first lady of the White House.
He was known as a great dresser and a gentleman.
Before moving into the White House, he had it scrubbed clean and removed 24 wagons of old furniture and junk which was auctioned off.
