Like Greta Garbo, she lead a reclusive life and avoided being filmed or photographed.
Her husband and Pygmalion, Walter Legge, treated her like a slave, often publicly insulting her – and she loved it.
The preciosity and artificiality of her singing can prove tiresome.
Her Italian diction stunk.
Her last name translates to ‘blackhead.’

Why she might not be annoying:

She survived tuberculosis.
Her German diction was remarkable and she excelled at characterization.
She strove for perfection and was very critical of herself musically.
Although she possessed a rather tiny voice, she achieved an equally large reputation as an opera and a lieder singer.
She gave master classes for free.
Despite being an opera singer, she was quite beautiful.
She went deaf in her old age.
