The Resume

    (March 8, 1996-February 8, 1998)
Aired 10 episodes for one season on ABC (1996) and 12 episodes for a second season on The Disney Channel (1997-98)
Premise: Similar to The Muppet Show except instead of a theatre the setting was TV Station KMUP (both 'live' and 'behind the camera' scenes)
Hosting duties were switched from Kermit the Frog to newer character Clifford, a Cajun-Rastafarian catfish looking muppet
New Muppets included Pepe the King Prawn, Johnny Fiama and sidekick Sal the Monkey, Bobo the Bear, Seymour the Elephant and Spamela Hamderson

Why Muppets Tonight might be annoying:

ABC filmed 13 episodes, but cancelled the show after 10 and sold the remaining three to The Disney Channel.
Statler and Waldorf heckled the cast while watching TV from their retirement home, as if the Muppets could hear them complaining.
Many were outraged that hosting duties were taken from Kermit and given to lesser known Clifford.
Muppeteer Kevin Clash hated the makeover given to Clifford.
Steve Whitmire stated that the show had just 'found itself' when it was cancelled.
Jim Henson was not part of the production as he was six years dead.

Why Muppets Tonight might not be annoying:

Unlike The Muppet Show's first season where they struggled to get guest stars, celebs were falling over themselves to be part of the show.
Gen X Muppet fans were thrilled to have stars they could relate to, such as Prince, Jason Alexander, Sandra Bullock, Pierce Brosnan and Garth Brooks.
It spoofed 1990's pop culture institutions such as 'Baywatch' and 'E.R.'
Pepe the Prawn, who made his debut on the show, went on to become a major Muppet cast member.
It introduced Miss Piggy's more attractive and less erratic alternative, Spamela Hamderson (a punny take-off of you know who).
It seamlessly had new Muppet characters coexisting with older familiar ones.
    It won two Emmys.
