Why he might be annoying:

He turned pro after his freshman season.
After being considered a top prospect among North American skaters, his stock dropped considerably in the rankings by year's end.
He likes playing golf during his spare time.
He was extremely over-rated as a college prospect.
He used 'hot dog' moves.
He was frequently the whipping boy for the Toronto media during his tenure with the Maple Leafs.
Some hockey pundits felt the Leafs gave up way too much to acquire him from Boston, given the fact that one of the draft picks the Bruins acquired in the trade was used to select Tyler Seguin.
He was the last pick chosen in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game Fantasy Draft, in which he looked like he was about to pout on camera when he was selected.

He was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
He returned to skating almost a month after surgery.
He is the first rookie in NHL history to earn the Masterton Trophy.
His father Phil Kessel, Sr. was a former quarterback for the Calgary Stampeders during the early 1980's.

He, along with Carl Hagelin and Nick Bonino, were part of the Penguins famed 'HBK Line' during the team's run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
He played in his 1000th consecutive game (November 17, 2022).
