Why he might be annoying:

He didn't have much success on the pop chart (his highest charting single was 1966's 'Ain't Nobody Home,' which reached #63).
By the late 1970s he was fed up with the music industry and quit.
In the 1980s he became a crack addict and ending up living in a homeless shelter in New Jersey.
He ended up recording for nine different record labels.
He became yet another singer turned preacher.
He gained a large amount of weight between his '60s heyday and his 2000s resurgence.

Why he might not be annoying:

Moving to Philadelphia in the early 1940s, he eventually joined a gospel group where his smooth R&B voice took shape.
In the 1960s he had three songs reach the Top 20 on the R&B chart.
His song 'Get It While You Can' was featured on Janis Joplin's posthumously released 1971 album 'Pearl.'
He beat his drug addiction and became a drug counselor.
In 2001, a NJ DJ rediscovered him and helped him sign a new record deal, leading to the 2003 release of the appropriately titled album 'Rediscovered.'
He recorded songs by such varying artists as Prince, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Randy Newman, Nick Lowe and Robbie Robertson.
In 2004 he sang at Denmark's annual Roskilde Festival.
He was a judge for the 6th annual Independent Music Awards in 2006.
