Why they might be annoying:

At early concerts, they created a pointless dance, named it after themselves and urged fans to 'Do the Rat.'
Their only American hit, 'I Don't Like Mondays' was inspired by a real-life school shooting.
The band was overshadowed by Geldof's charity work.
Briquette is the only band member who still works with Geldof.
The other four sued Geldof over unpaid royalties.

Why they might not be annoying:

They took their name from a gang of children in Woody Guthrie's biography 'Bound for Glory.'
Geldof said, 'We played and recorded exactly the kind of music we wanted, whether or not it made commercial sense.'
'Rat Trap' was the first single by an Irish rock band to top the British charts (1978).
Their video for 'Up All Night' was a favorite of VJs on MTV's graveyard shift.
