Why he might be annoying:

When 'peep booth' creator Nat Bailen complained about his invention being used for smut, Thevis ordered Bailen's factory burned to the ground (1970).
He shot an employee who asked for a raise (1973).
After being convicted of conspiracy to commit arson, he escaped from jail and tracked down and killed the main witness against him, Roger Dean Underhill, and an associate, Isaac Galanti (1978).
The book 'Sleazoid Express' incorrectly reported that he had died in prison in the 80s.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a struggling newsstand operator who turned to porn after discovering that 'Playboy' accounted for only 10% of his sales but almost all of his profits.
While branching into legit businesses, he financed one of Oliver Stone's first films, 'Seizure.'
    He was denied parole (1999).
