Why he might be annoying:

    He changed his name to avoid being confused with cowboy star William S. Hart.
    He divorced actress Ann Sothern.
    He was signed by MGM as a potential replacement for Robert Taylor in case Taylor was sent overseas during WWII.
    He was considered for the lead in Perry Mason, but was passed over in favor of Raymond Burr.
