    He was expelled from Syracuse University for bulldozing a bed of flowers spelling out the school's name.
    He was married and divorced twice.
    He co-starred four times with Paula Prentiss, mainly because they were the two tallest actors under contract to their studio (he at 6'5, she at 5'10).

    While stationed with the Army in Germany, he founded the American Community Theatre of Berlin, the first English-language theater in the city.
    His lanky appearance and affable delivery drew comparisons with James Stewart.
    Upon winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, his son Timothy said, 'This is for my dad. I wish he were here to see it.'
