The Resume

    (December 11, 1864-November 6, 1941)
    Born in Rouen, France
Creator of Arsene Lupin the Gentleman Thief (1907, includes ‘Arsene Lupin contre Herlock Sholmes,’ ‘L’aiguille creuse’ (The Hollow Needle), ‘813,’ ‘Dorothee, danseuse de corde,’ (The Secret Tomb, or Dorothy the Rope Dancer), and ‘La comtesse de Cagliostro’)
Also authored ‘Une femme,’ ‘Arnelle et Claude,’ ‘Les trois yeux’ (Three Eyes), ‘La vie extravagante de Balthazar,’ ‘Le Prince de Jericho’ (Man of Mystery), and ‘De minuit a sept heures’ (From Midnight to Morning)
    1908 Medal of Honour recipient

Why he might be annoying:

A complaint by local councilman named Arsene Lopin – the (deliberate!) previous name for the ‘gentleman cambrioleur’ – prompted the name change.
Though born wealthy and cultured, he was a law-school dropout.
Like Gaston Leroux – and to a lesser extent Arthur Conan Doyle – he would be heavily overshadowed by his signature creation (the latter to whom his was often compared).
Lupin III, a Japanese graphic novel (or manga) with Arsene Lupin’s ‘grandson’ as the protagonist, became a breeding ground for a lawsuit from the family estate despite an expired copyright.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was younger, the family fled to Perpignan – his location of death – to escape the German occupation.
Before law school, he studied in several other nations and briefly worked in the family firm.
When he was asked by his publisher to create a hero in the vein of Holmes, he instead created a roguish opposite.
