He was born in Orlando, when his father Jim was an assistant coach with the IHL's Orlando Solar Bears.
He was the second player in three years to be selected first overall by the Devils.
He is the second member of his family to be drafted in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft, following his brother Quinn.
He remained humble and modest and downplayed the hype leading up to the draft.
He was the youngest player to compete on the U.S. National team roster at the IIHF World Hockey Championship (2019)
