    (April 16, 1871-March 24, 1909)
    Born in Rathfarnham, Ireland
Wrote the plays ‘The Shadows of the Glen' (1903), ‘Riders to the Sea' (1904), ‘The Well of the Saints' (1905), ‘The Playboy of the Western World' (1907) and ‘The Tinkers' Wedding' (1909)

He initially planned to be a professional musician, but gave it up because of severe stage fright.
Irish nationalists repeatedly denounced his plays as insulting to the Irish people.

Why he might not be annoying:

He proposed twice to Cherrie Mattheson but was rejected because of his atheism.
Although his parents were firm opponents of Irish independence, he became a leading contributor to the Irish National Theatre.
He collected the folktales of Ireland's Aran Islands.
After the ‘Playboy' riots, he wrote, ‘Now we'll be talked about. We're an event in the history of the Irish stage.'
