TV Series
    (October 4, 1962-February 9, 1969)
Aired on ITV (1962-69) and NBC (1966-69)
Starred Roger Moore as Simon Templar
Premise: Exploits of a Robin Hood-like criminal turned detective
Based on the character created by Leslie Charteris
Patrick McGoohan was offered the lead role, but turned it down because he disapproved of Simon Templar's womanizing.
Early episodes featured the gimmick of Templar addressing the audience during the sequence before the opening titles.
During an extended hiatus when the series switched from b&w to color (1965), Charteris wrote to the producers, 'I cannot adequately convey my delight that this is apparently the last of your Saint productions, and the last time I shall suffer the ordeal of reading the corny abominations which you have lately been perpetrating on my stories.'
Due to Moore's commitment to the series, he was unable to accept an offer to play James Bond when Sean Connery quit, leading to George Lazenby's short-lived stint as Bond.
It inspired a Val Kilmer film that was a critical and box office flop (1997).
The series caused sales of Simon Templar's car, the Volvo P1800, to skyrocket.
The series was sold to over 60 countries and generated $350 million in profits.
When the series switched to color, Moore became a co-owner and co-producer and later directed several episodes.
Rather appropriately given Moore's later career, in an early episode a woman misidentifies Simon Templar as James Bond.
