His recipe for a long life was ‘Keep your head cool by temperance and your feet warm by exercise. Rise early, go to bed soon, keep your eyes open and your mouth shut.’
When King Charles I asked what he had done that was greater than any other man, he replied that he was the oldest man to perform penance for an affair.
‘Old Parr’ Scotch whiskey was named after him.
