Why he might be annoying:

He was divorced.
He wrote an autobiography.
He fought with Bette Midler during filming of 'Jinxed.'
He said: 'Most of my pictures, I'm sorry to say, are about nothing, because I'm a whore. I work for money. It's the American way.'
He was so disappointed at how 'Death of a Gunfighter' came out, that he ordered his name be taken off of it. The generic alias 'Alan Smithee' was slapped on in its place.

Why he might not be annoying:

He attended Cambridge University.
He heavily influenced Clint Eastwood.
Eastwood dedicated 'Unforgiven' to him.
As a film editor, he earned a reputation for his unique montage sequences.
He directed 'The Killers' for TV, but it was so good that it was released to theaters (1964).
He had the ability to turn a dumb script into something interesting.
