Animal

The Resume

    (1978-1992)
    Born in Merrimac, Wisconsin
Dogue de Bordeaux (a.k.a. French mastiff)
Owned and trained by Clint Rowe
Portrayed Hooch in 'Turner and Hooch' (1989)

Why he might be annoying:

His only other acting credit was in the pilot for a 'Turner and Hooch' TV series that did not get picked up.
He drooled so much that it ruined the car seat he was sitting on during a stakeout scene.
Several scenes of Turner walking Hooch had to be refilmed when he pulled Tom Hanks off his feet or broke away from Hanks' grip.
Hanks said working with him was difficult: 'The whole thing was about, whatever this dog does, I react to. We will not ask the dog to do anything specifically, this dog will just do things and I will react. That was the hardest I've ever worked.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He lived for about twice the average lifespan of his breed.
Unlike his human costar, he did not throw his weight around to get original director Henry Winkler fired over 'creative differences.' (Winkler's comment years later: 'Let's just say I got along better with Hooch than I did with Turner.')
Gene Siskel favorably compared his performance to that of Hanks, who he described as 'wooden.' (And just how many human performers can say that one of America's most famous critics thought they had outacted a future two-time Oscar winner?)
