    Born in Hartford, Connecticut
Acted in 'The Emperor Jones,' 'The Lady is Willing,' 'The Spoilers,' 'Not a Ladies Man,' 'The Magnificent Dope,' 'Silver Queen,' 'Mexican Spitfire's Blessed Event,' 'Goin' to Town,' 'Lady in the Dark,' 'The Bad and the Beautiful,' 'The Foolish Heart,' 'Father of the Bride,' 'Bright Leaf,' 'Father's Little Dividend,' and 'Rebel Without a Cause'

Why she might be annoying:

She was typecast in stereotypical 'Mammy' roles, perpetuating stereotypes about black women.
She is frequently confused with Louise Beavers, whom she physically resembled and who was also typecast in maid roles.
She frequently played women named 'Delilah.'
Unlike Louise Beavers or Hattie McDaniel, she rarely had opportunities to display her acting talents in the subservient roles she played.
She was obligated by the studio to eat extra portions to maintain the body type suitable for a 'Mammy.'
She frequently worked on the controversial 'Amos n' Andy' radio show in the 1940s.
She unsuccessfully ran for Hartford City Council in 1961 and 1963.

Why she might not be annoying:

She played maids to some of Hollywood's most glamorous stars, including Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, and Lana Turner.
She was educated and bred in New England but had to learn 'Negro speak' to maintain work in the movies.
She got so fed up with Hollywood's racism that she retired at 51 and returned to Hartford, where she had infinitely more success in local politics and social work.
She received the Women of the Year Award by Araat Chapter of the B'nai B'rith for outstanding civic service (1960).
She received the Humanitarian Award from the Hartford Section of National Council of Women (1969).
She received the Council Achievement Award from the National Coucil of Negro Women (1972).
She received the certificate of Service and Award Recognition from the American Red Cross.
She was President of the Local Home Mission of AME Church for twenty years.
She served as President of the Hartford Council of National Council of Negro Women; and regional director for National Conference of Women.
Her house in Hartford is a Connecticut State Landmark.
She had a memorable exchange with Katharine Hepburn when expressing her preference to Connecticut over Hollywood, to which Kate replied 'I would have thought something was wrong with you if you didn’t prefer Connecticut.'
