In municipal records, he is described as 'making himself obnoxious to everyone' by trampling and ruining crops while hunting.
He beat a peasant and assaulted a sergeant at arms.
His work was largely forgotten after his death until he was rediscovered in the early 20th century.
Many of his paintings were misattributed to other artists.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a master at depicting scenes illuminated by candlelight.
His home, studio and an unknown number of paintings were destroyed by fire when Luneville was sacked and burnt during the wars to control Lorraine (1638).
