He was considered washed up several times in his career.
In 1972, he threw only 8 TD passes against 25 interceptions.
He was the number 3 quarterback for the Raiders in 1978, and didn't take one snap.
He didn't reach his potential with the Patriots or 49ers.
He finished his career with 34 more interceptions than touchdowns (164 TD, 198 int.).

Both of his parents were legally blind.
He is the first Hispanic quarterback to win the Super Bowl.
He chose to attend Stanford because of their academic tradition.
He had the arm strength that Al Davis covets for the ‘vertical passing game.'

He won the Super Bowl XV MVP in 1981.
