Why he might be annoying:

He was deeply religious.
He planted the apple trees as a scheme to profit, by selling the apple producing trees to new settlers.
His life is told through many legends, including a story that claims he could communicate with animals.
He was a vegetarian.

Why he might not be annoying:

He led by example.
He wanted America to be a fertile country full of trees, so he began by planting apple trees in Western New York and then moving into Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.
He never carried a weapon.
He sold the trees at a low price (usually just pennies, sometimes for old clothing and other times for promises to pay).
