During a match between American player Monica Seles and Bulgarian player Magdalena Maleeva (Seles up 6-4, 4-3) ran onto the court and stabbed Seles between her shoulder blades with a 10-inch boning knife
Claimed he did it to help German tennis player Steffi Graf achieve the #1 ranking in women's tennis
Arrested and charged with attempted murder
In October 1993 found guilty of the lesser charge of causing grievous bodily harm
Given a two-year suspended sentence and mandatory psychological treatment
Why he might be annoying
He is a mentally disturbed loner.
Many believed his sick obsession was with Seles, not knowing his plan was to heighten Graf's career by attacking her biggest rival.
Unfortunately the plan worked and Seles was off the circuit for 28 months.
An eight time Grand Slam champ, Seles never had the same intensity level when she returned.
His lenient sentence was condemned by the public in general and Seles and her family in particular.
Why he might not be annoying
The idea that the act was politically motivated as part of Seles' Serbian roots as a native Yugoslavian were quickly dismissed.
He insisted he was only trying to incapacitate Seles for a short period of time, not kill her.
Tennis matches as well as other sporting venues received tighter security due to the attack.
Seles did manage to win one more Grand Slam title after the assault - the 1996 Australian Open.
