Author
    (February 7, 1908-August 14, 1973)
    Born in Mason County, Texas
Best known for writing ‘Old Yeller’ (1956)
Also wrote two sequels ‘Savage Sam’ (1962) and ‘Little Arliss’ (published posthumously, 1978)
Wrote the novels ‘Hound Dog Man’ (1949), ‘The Home Place’ (1950), ‘Cowhand: The Story of a Working Cowboy’ (1953), and ‘Recollection Creek’ (1955)
He became a heavy drinker, prone to fits of rage, which helped break up his first marriage.
His second marriage lasted less than a year.
He traumatized generations of children when Disney adapted ‘Old Yeller’ into (as Phoebe Buffay described it) a ‘sick doggie snuff film.’
He felt most children’s books were too sweet and needed a dose of realism.
‘Old Yeller’ won the Young Readers’ Choice Award (1959).
He was elected president of the Texas Institute of Letters (1960).
