The Resume
(1957- )
Also known as 'La eMe' (Spanish for the letter 'M')
Formed by Luis 'Huero Buff' Flores who was jailed at the Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, CA
Established by Flores and 12 other Mexican-Americans from East Los Angeles
Hierarchy modeled after the Sicilian Mafia includes generals, captains, lieutenants, sergeants and soldiers (carnales)
Appx. 30,000 members (mostly in California with a few factions in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and Florida
Symbols include a black hand (modeled after the Mafia), an eagle and a snake (national symbol of Mexico), an 'M,' 'MM' and the number '13' (M being the 13th letter of the alphabet)
Rules enforced under penalty of death include no snitching, no homosexual acts, no cowardice and no disrespecting or causing dissension amongst fellow members
Rival gangs include the Black Guerrilla Family and the Nuestra Familia
Why they might be annoying
Their founders self-righteously referred to themselves as Mexikanemi - an Aztec Nahuatl term translating to 'He who walks with God in his heart.'
They are cold-blooded killers.
Once a person joins the only way out is through the murder of the quitter.
Since the 1960s they've practically cornered the California market of drug trafficking within prison walls.
They prohibit any form of practicing Christianity.
They offer prison protection for jailed Sicilian Mafia members.
Their long-running and violent feud with the Nuestra Familia started over a pair of stolen shoes.
Members must get permission to kill a fellow gang member by three higher ranking members, but they are free to kill whoever they want that isn't a Mexican Mafia member.
After actor/director Edward James Olmos came out with the 1992 film 'American Me' depicting members in a negative way (including a homosexual rape), they tried to extort money from him to 'stay alive' and killed two gang members who were consultants on the film.
Why they might not be annoying
They originally formed to help protect fellow Mexican American prisoners from harm by non-Mexican inmates.
Proving they're not completely prejudiced, they've allied themselves with the Aryan Brotherhood - albeit to help murder Black Guerrilla Family members.
Low level members know they won't see any gang activity money but remain loyal due to a sense of belonging (and that murdered if they quit thing).
Southern California authorities in both 2001 and 2006 successfully prosecuted over 30 members each time on RICO Act (racketeering) crimes.
