The Resume

    (December 24, 1843-August 11, 1886)
    Born in Vändra, Estonia
Real name is Lydia Emilie Florentine Jannsen
    Koidula means 'of the dawn'
Also known as 'Koidulaulik', meaning 'Singer of the Dawn'
Worked with her father Johann Voldemar Jannsen on his newspaper ‘The Courier’
Wrote the poems ‘Meadow Flowers’ (1866), ‘The Nightingale of Emajõgi’ (1867), ‘My Fatherland is My Love’, and ‘Before Death, To Estonia!
Also wrote the plays ‘The Cousin from Saaremaa’, ‘The Betrothal Birches’ (both in 1870), ‘What a Bumpkin!’, and ‘Such a Mulk, or a Hundred Pura of Salt’ (1872)

Why she might be annoying:

    She had frizzy hair.
She always felt homesick upon moving to Kronstadt even though she spent her summers in Estonia.
Her works were largely anonymous because writing wasn’t regarded as a suitable career for well-to-do women of her time.
Inevitably, her works had substantial German influence due to the strong influence of Baltic Germans in Estonia for centuries, and it wasn’t until ‘What a Bumpkin!’ that she finally had an original work.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was a highly influential figure of Estonian literature.
She was the founder of Estonian theater.
She proved that a vernacular language like Estonian can be used as a popular instrument of communication and nationalism.
‘My Fatherland is My Love’ is still sung in Estonia to end festivals.
