She became estranged from her father over her decision to act rather than teach; ironically, she ended up working as a French instructor while looking for acting jobs.
She was married and divorced four times.
She was the prototype for Alfred Hitchcock's 'ice-cool blondes.'
She named her Yorkshire terriers 'Tricky' and 'Dicky' after Richard Nixon.
During the filming of 'The 39 Steps,' she developed welts on her wrist from Hitchcock leaving her handcuffed to co-star Robert Donat for extended periods.
Her $250,000 salary made her the highest-paid actress in Hollywood (1938).
After her sister was killed in a London bombing raid, she suspended her acting career and worked in field hospitals as a Red Cross nurse.
She received the French Legion of Honor for bravery.
