Basketball Player

The Resume

    (September 7, 1944-May 15, 1998)
    Born in Charleston, South Carolina
Street basketball player in New York City
Subject of the HBO movie 'Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault' (1998)
Featured in the documentary 'Doin' It in the Park' (2012)

Why he might be annoying:

There is a dispute over whether his nickname 'the Goat' was an abbreviation for 'Greatest of All Time' or the result of a mispronunciation of his last name.
He was expelled from high school for smoking marijuana in the locker room.
He dropped out of college after one semester due to poor academic performance and repeated conflicts with his coach.
    He never played professionally.
He had an unsuccessful tryout with the Utah Stars of the ABA.
He spent 16 months in prison for drug possession (1969-70).
He served two years after a failed robbery attempt to get money for his heroin addiction (1977-79).
After shooting up heroin, he nodded off while smoking and set the sweatshirt he was wearing on fire.

Why he might not be annoying:

He set a New York City junior high record by scoring 57 points in a game.
As a child, he practiced constantly with ankle weights to improve his jumping ability.
His signature move was the double dunk: he would dunk the ball, catch it with his left hand, switch the ball to his right hand, bring it back around to the top of the basket and jam it through again, all done while still in the air on a single jump, and without hanging on the rim.
He once took off near the foul line, cleared two players half a foot taller than himself and made a two-handed dunk.
He won a $60 bet by reverse dunking 36 times in a row.
After his second prison term, he started the 'Walk Away From Drugs' tournament for children in Harlem to keep them from making the same mistakes he had made.
Kareem Abdul-Jabar called Manigault the greatest player he had ever played against.
