Why he might be annoying:

    He married an Indian maiden, Kittihawa, twice. First in a traditional Indian ceremony, then when the Catholic priest was in the region.
    He sold his five-room house with a trading post consisting of a mill, bake house, dairy, smokehouse, workshop, poultry house, horse stable and barn for $1,200 (May 7, 1800).
    He moved to Missouri and later went bankrupt (1813).
    He died in poverty.
    He named his son after himself.

    He was the son of an African-born slave mother and French mariner.
    He was well educated.
    He was involved in a shipwreck while heading to New Orleans (1762).
    He owned twenty-three art pieces.
    He spoke French, English, Spanish, and several Indian dialects.
    He built a successful trading post on a swampy grassland which become Chicago.
    He officially founded Chicago (1968).
    A U.S. 22¢ stamp in the Black Heritage Series was issued in his honor (February 20, 1987).
    He married a Native American woman (of the Potawatomi tribe).
    He ran a trading post that served all explorers, including the French, British, Americans and Native Americans.
    He was the first non-Native American to reside in a settlement that became part of Chicago, Illinois.
    He built the first house in the area that became Chicago.
    His loyalty was toward the Americans, causing his arrest by the British Empire (1779).
    He had to endure racially charged harrassment from both British and American troops.
    His successful trading post was well known throughout the northeast.
    His son died 4 years before he did.
