Hit songs he wrote include Lynn Anderson's '(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden,' Deep Purple's 'Hush,' the Osmonds' 'Yo-Yo' and Billy Joe Royal's 'Down in the Boondocks'

Why he might be annoying:

His first record was a novelty song, 'The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor.' (1958)
He was often hostile towards audiences, once suggesting that they dance around the concert hall and when they approached the stage, they could kiss his ass.
He was addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates.
He admits he cannot remember the speech he gave when he won the Song of the Year Grammy because he was so high on drugs.
He killed off his career momentum by dropping out for several years to live in Maui 'just walking up and down the beach and hiding in the jungle.'

A year after getting his first guitar, he was hosting a radio show on an Atlanta country station.
As a session guitarist, he played on Aretha Franklin's 'Chain of Fools' and Bob Dylan's 'Blonde on Blonde' album.
He won the Song of the Year Grammy for 'Games People Play.'
His move to Maui was a reaction to the suicide of his brother.
