Why he might be annoying:

He was arrogant.
He was favored to win the gold medal in 5000 meters at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games but finished a disappointing fourth.
After drinking at a party, he drove his convertible into a rock wall. The car overturned, killing him.
Pretty boys Jared Leto and Billy Crudup portrayed him in the biographical film bombs 'Prefontaine' and 'Without Limits,' respectively.

Why he might not be annoying:

At the time of his death, he held the American record in every track event from 2000 to 10,000 meters.
He fought for the rights of amateur athletes.
He also volunteered at local schools and Oregon State Prison by creating running clubs.
In 1974, Steve was the first athlete to sign with Nike, the corporation founded by his coach Bill Bowerman.
The 'Pre Classic,' one the world's top track events, is annually held in his honor.
