He said one effect of the success of ''Mambo Kings' was 'I have fewer friends and many more acquaintances.'
Commenting on his willingness to provide dust jacket quotes for just about every other Latino writer in the 1990s, he said 'I must have been known as a blurb slut.'
He disliked being thought of as an 'ethnic' writer: 'I know I'll be reviewed one way because my name is Hispanic and I'd be reviewed another way if my name were O'Brien.'

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was four, he developed nephritis after a vacation in Cuba and was hospitalized for the better part of a year, having little contact with his family.
Growing up in a neighborhood of mixed ethnicity, he encountered discrimination from whites because he was Latino and from Latinos because of his light skin.
He became the first Latino author to receive the Pulitzer Prize for fiction when 'Mambo Kings' won in 1990.
