    Best known for recording the original version of ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ (1957)
    Her attempt to learn violin was not a success: her family celebrated when she lent the instrument to a friend who never returned it.
    She began an affair with MacColl while he was married to his second wife.
    To gain British citizenship and avoid being deported, she married folksinger Alex Campbell – while seven months pregnant with MacColl’s child (January 24, 1959).
    She said, ‘My voice isn’t a beautiful voice. Joan Baez has a beautiful voice. Mine is a character voice.’
    In her teens, she accompanied musicologist Alan Lomax on his tours of American collecting folksongs.
    She plays guitar, piano, banjo, autoharp, dulcimer and concertina.
    The State Department revoked her passport after she toured the Soviet Union and China against their ‘advice.’ (1957)
    The Village Voice wrote, ‘Those who regard Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Laura Nyro as the first generation of singer-songwriters to craft material from women's experiences should think again. Seeger is a missing link between 1950s American folk-song revival and women’s liberation.’
