The Resume

Why The Nobel Prize in Literature might be annoying:

Next to the Nobel Peace and Economics Prizes, it is the most controversial of the Nobel Prizes.
Notable omissions include; Marcel Proust, Ezra Pound, Graham Greene, Tennessee Williams, John Updike, and Arthur Miller.
Winston Churchill won because of his reputation as a speech giver.
Jean-Paul Sartre turned his prize down.
Two members of the nominating committee resigned in protest when the committee refused to support Salman Rushdie when his life was threatened.
It has been heavily criticized for awarding left leaning writers, ignoring popular writers for writers with more critical acclaim, and for Eurocentrism.
As of 2009, Sweden has won almost as many awards (six) as Asia (4), Africa (1), and the Arab world (2) combined.
Only seven women have won the award.
Many of the European writers that have won the prize are complete unknowns outside their own countries.
Due to the awarding of the prize to unknowns and the obvious bias of the nominating committee, it is the least prestigious of the Nobel prizes.

Why The Nobel Prize in Literature might not be annoying:

It ha,s in fact, been awarded to many very good writers.
Unlike the other Noble Prizes, it is rarely shared, usually with one and one only winner per year.
Although a writer's overall career enters into the nominating process, a winning writer usually has a currently popular work in print at the time of his win, as opposed to the scientific awards which may be given for work done decades before their win.
The winners receive a prize for over one million dollars, which is a godsend for a struggling writer.
